Nortel, One of the Original Telecommunications Giants
Question: A big challenge in business today is understanding the rapidly changing world of telecommunications. If you’re still using your old Nortel phone system from 15 or 20 years ago (not at all uncommon, BTW,) you’re likely coming face-to-face with this situation.
Answer: The great question is how to make that leap, especially when it seems so unfamiliar? Luckily, E-MetroTel eases that gap and makes the transition so very much easier and a lot less expensive than it would otherwise be. They do so by emulating all Nortel phone systems in use today with the combination of their unifying UCX software, compact PBXs and an incredible Cloud-based business telephony system.
A Brief History…
Nortel Networks, founded in Montreal, Quebec in1895 as Northern Electric, became a global leader in the field of telecommunications. Throughout its history, it focused on networking solutions for voice, data, and video networks. Catering to ISPs, telecom carriers, enterprises, and dot-coms, Nortel offered diverse networking products and services. They were pioneers in Internet Protocol, high-speed access, long-distance / optical transmission and wireless technologies. Their top-selling products included switches, routers, and telecommunications infrastructure, making them a pivotal force in the industry. At its zenith, Nortel reported annual sales surpassing $22 billion.
Nortel’s Demise
However, an accounting scandal led to the company filing bankruptcy in 2009, culminating in a prolonged legal battle for settlements that persisted until 2017. But, despite the company’s closure, millions of Nortel phone systems continue to be operational in businesses all over the globe, a testament to their widespread adoption and durability even after the official end of Nortel’s operations.

Upgrading your old phone system is much easier and cheaper than it used to be! (And the same is true for your Dialtone / Connectivity services.) Furthermore, you’ll have features you never knew existed that can make your business-life simpler, easier and more profitable!
The Ongoing Legacy
At this point, no public information is available on the exact count of companies in the world still using Nortel telephone systems. However, considering the historical popularity of Nortel systems and the longevity of their use, a significant number of businesses still utilize these systems, as evident from the volume of social media discussions about their discontinuation since 2010.
Your Next Steps
There is no denying that Nortel systems were built very well and made to last. Two of their main product lines, Norstar and Meridian phone systems, were heavyweights in the business community in their heyday. However, if you are still using an old Nortel system, you are long overdue for an upgrade. These systems are becoming outdated, posing security risks and challenges due to the lack of ongoing support. Businesses are encouraged to switch to more modern, supported, and secure communication systems, like Voice over IP or cloud-based solutions.
Over the past decade, telecom technology has changed dramatically giving us unimaginable capabilities to improve every aspect of business communications.
What Are Your Choices?
There are a few options.
