Microwave Point-to-Point RF Links

The problem: staying connected in a world of barriers
The ubiquitous requirements for network and Internet connectivity continue to expand as the human imagination creates evermore ways to make use of these interrelated and continuously evolving technologies. Every day, innovative solutions are continuously being developed that need to be ‘connected’ or will soon be in demand by new audiences. Just a few years ago, who would have imagined that your refrigerator or your coffee machine would be on the Internet!
This ever-growing pressure for connectivity occasionally puts this “progress” on a collision path with existing buildings, the contours of your surrounding geography, or some other natural or man-made barrier to our forward movement.
Obstacles such as a major highway, a body of water or a neighboring property can sometimes be insurmountable when you are trying to connect to your new building or a new suite of offices “…just over there!”
Even in a campus environment where your organization owns most or all of the buildings, it can be cost-prohibitive to dig up a newly constructed outdoor employee patio or relocate a climate-controlled greenhouse or snake around other buildings, underground, to reach your Point B.
Pictured to the right and below are the two endpoints of a redundant microwave RF connection between two buildings separated by a six-lane Interstate highway. Total cost was in the low-five-figures and was installed in 3 weeks. This company had been given an alternative proposal which was for a mid-six-figure fiber optic cabling project.

The Solution? Microwave links!
Point-to-Point microwave antennas, similar to TV dishes, on the roofs of your Point A and Point B buildings solve the problem! These microwave radio-frequency connections are perfect for providing network connectivity in any number of otherwise difficult scenarios. Data is transmitted wirelessly using high-frequency radio waves over distances of up to many kilometers, as long as the two locations have a clear line of sight.
The fact that they are “broadband” makes this RF technology for Internet connectivity very cost-effective to deploy. And it is relatively easy to plan and install, usually taking only a few weeks as opposed to months or even years for some solutions. And maintenance is simple too.
- They can convey huge amounts of data at very high speeds (300 Mbps to 1 Gbps)
- There is no other infrastructure between the two roof-top antennas to complicate matters, so they’re less costly and faster to install than leased-line or trenched fiber optic alternatives
- A microwave link can be set up anywhere there is “line-of-sight” between the endpoints and the equipment is specified for the distance that you need to cover
- Finally, the weather does not interfere with the signal since microwaves routinely penetrate snow, fog, and rain. Although extreme weather can affect signal strength to some degree.
